South America is a continent in the Western Hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere.

It’s also  considered as a subcontinent of the Americas, this is viewed in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking regions of the Americas.


South America is one of the seven continents on the planet.

The Pacific Ocean borders South America to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean borders it to the east.


The Caribbean Sea and the North American continent lie to the northwest.

There are twelve countries in South America  and three dependencies and the total population of South America is approximately 425 million.


Around 90% of total population are Catholics and  some Protestants, Jews and some people are free to practice their faith and beliefs.


Do you know that English, Spanish and Portuguese are the most common languages spoken in South America but Spanish is the main language in South American countries,


Many people speak also English as a second language. Quechua, the language spoken by the Inca, is the most common too.


Only in Brazil people speak Portuguese, but there are still some indigenous languages spoken among a large number of people, such as Quechua (8,9 million speakers), Guarani (4,9 million speakers), and Aymara (2,8 million speakers). 


As per  linguists, it’s estimated that there are around 300 languages, which are spoken on a daily basis in South America continent.


It’s really amazing and interesting to know that South America’s landscape is surrounded by natural beauty like from mountains to highlands such as the Andes, river basins such as the Amazon and Orinoco and coastal plains where the Atacama Desert also belongs to.

The two  landlocked countries in South America are the Paraguay and the Bolivia, these are located in the interior of the continent and have neither access to the Atlantic Ocean nor to the Pacific Ocean


South America is known for it’s the southernmost city in the world it’s on the South American continent and The city is called Ushuaia, and it’s located on the Argentinian part of the Tierra del Fuego.

Two of the four remaining areas of pristine tropical forest in the world are located in South America, and while most people are familiar with the Amazon rainforest, the Iwokrama Forest is located in Guyana and is one of the few remaining habitats of the Giant Anteater.


Main natural resources in South America are minerals such as iron, copper and agricultural produce such as corn, coffee, wheat, soybean and cocoa.


The South America continent is too rich for its wildlife. In South America there are tapirs, piranhas and anacondas and many other animals. 


South America continent is also home to many endangered animals such as the jaguar, the giant otter or the Amazonian manatee.





Fourth—: Largest, Biggest, Tallest and Smallest 


Five largest cities out of the top 50 largest cities in the world are located in South America. It includes the Sao Paulo, Lima, Bogota, Rio, and Santiago.


Brazil is the largest country in South America. It’s really amazing to know that Brazil is only slightly smaller than the USA.


Sao Paulo in Brazil is the largest city in South America with the total population around 20 million inhabitants. Sao Paulo is considered as one of the 10 biggest cities in the world.

Suriname is the smallest city in the South America. The country is marked as one of the 10 most sparsely populated countries in the world.

Tierra del Fuego, it means Land of Fire, is the biggest island at the southern tip of Argentina and Chile.


It’s unbelievable and incredible that the Longest River of South America is the Amazon River. It covers 6,437 meters /4,000miles. The Amazon is not only the second longest river in the world after the Nile, but also the Amazon carries more water than the world’s other 10 biggest rivers combined.

Aconcagua in Argentina is considered as the highest mountain in South America.

The mountain covers 6,961meters /22,837ft and it is located in the Andes mountain range.

The Aconcagua is also marked as the second highest of the world’s Seven Summits after Mount Everest which is in Asia.

The Biggest Lake in South America is the Lake Titicaca. It’s shared by Bolivia and Peru.


La Paz is the highest capital in the world. Many visitors can’t afford to stay in this city more frequently.


South America is also marked as the home of the tallest waterfall in the world.


Fifth—: Amazon


The Amazon rainforest is considered to have the greatest biodiversity in the world, with hundreds of different animals species, around 40,000 plant species and a incredible 2.5 million different species of insects.

Seventh—: Salver De Uyuni- Bolivia


Salver de uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world

Around 10000 square kilometers.


Colorful lakes in southern Bolivia including Laguna Verde (green), Laguna Colorado(red) and Laguna Blanca (White) and is as amazing as Salt flat.


Laguna Quilitoa the colorful crater lake in Ecuador can be seen as the part of the multi day Quilitoa loop trek

There is small town just below the lake.
